This adaptation of an ancient, stringed instrument, called a nevel in Hebrew, is likely akin to the one King David played as a shepherd boy. According to 1 Samuel 16:14-23, when King Saul was troubled, the young David was brought to him to play his harp and provide soothing comfort from the depression tormenting the king. While music played a vital part in celebrations and religious worship, David was particularly legendary as a musician, and the composer of the Psalms.
