White Satin Jerusalem Shabbat Challah Cover
Embroidered White Satin Challah Cover with Jerusalem design. The New Jerusalem design and embroidered in the center of the cover is "Shabbat and Yom Tov" in Hebrew. This refers to when a challah is used in celebration -- on the Sabbath and on holidays or "Good Days" (Yom Tov).
A challah cover is a special decorative cloth placed over the challah, which are the braided loaves of bread set out on the table at the beginning of a Shabbat or Yom Tov (holiday) meal. We use a challah cover at the Shabbat and holiday meal in remembrance of the manna in the desert after the Exodus. Each morning the Israelites would discover the manna in the fields, encased in two layers of dew to preserve its freshness. We use the challah cover to reenact the discovery of the manna and to keep fresh like the dew. Secondly, the challah is covered because we bless the wine at the table first. The challah is covered so it does not seem less important during the blessings. It is unveiled in all its glory for at the time for its own blessing.
