Barley and wheat were some of the most important plants of ancient Israel and still very important to modern Israel. The reason is the same... to feed the people of the nation. Planted in the autumn, grown during the winter rains and harvested in spring, the first-fruits of grain offered during the Passover would have been barley and wheat.
