Hand-inscribed parchment bearing the words of Deuteronomy 6.
Mezuzah parchments are 100% kosher and inscribed by a qualified scribe (a "sofer stam" in Hebrew). The verses are written in black indelible ink with a special quill pen on animal hide.

It acknowledges G-d's sovereignty over the home. Within is a hand-inscribed parchment bearing the words of Deuteronomy 6: "Hear O Israel: The Lord our G-d is one Lord...And thou shalt write them (the words of G-d) upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates."
