After Mary and Joseph were married, the Emperor Caesar Augustus commanded everyone to return to their own towns so that a census could be taken of the Roman Empire. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, they discovered the town teeming with people. Though Mary was about to give birth, they were unable to find lodging and finally took shelter in a stable. During the night the baby was born, and with no other crib, was placed in a manger to sleep.
