In the Torah, in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, we are commanded to affix a Mezuzah to the right-hand door post as we enter a dwelling.
Regardless of its style or ornamentation, every Mezuzah contains a piece of parchment inscribed with those biblical passages. On the back of the parchment is the word "Shaddai" which is not only a name of God but also an acronym for "Shomer Dlatot Yisrael" - The guardian of Israel's doors.
This piece is adapted from a 19th century embossed-silver Mezuzah case from the Western Ukraine.
