Spikenard, also called Nard, is a sweet smelling aromatic flowering plant that has long been used in essential oils and perfumes and symbolizes genuineness and purity.
Spikenard of Mary anointing oil derives from the New Testament passage John 12:1-3 when Mary, sister of Lazarus anoints Jesus' feet with nard, "Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived... Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume."
